FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team makes its longest road trip of the season - and the last one outside of North Carolina - beginning Thursday night at Lincoln (PA). Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by games at Virginia Union on Saturday and Monday, respectively. The Lady Broncos are fresh off a win against Elizabeth City State in which they avenged an early loss to the Lady Vikings.
The Lady Broncos go on the road for the first time since a tournament in Florida on Dec. 20-21. This season, they are 4-2 away from Felton J. Capel Arena, with two of the games (both wins) counting as neutral contests.
Nobody in the Northern Division has a winning conference record. Lincoln is one of three teams - along with Virginia Union and Elizabeth City State - yet to win a conference game. Everybody in the Southern Division has a winning conference record. Winston-Salem State and Johnson C. Smith are 3-0 and St. Augustine's is 2-0. Fayetteville State, Shaw and Livingstone are each 2-1 in CIAA play.
FSU is second in the conference in free throws made per game (17.7) and first in free throw percentage (73.9 percent). The Lady Broncos are second in points per game allowed (52.9).
Deja Middleton leads the conference in rebounds per game (10.2).
The Lady Broncos are in their 62nd season as a program and have compiled an all-time record of 589-400 and 333-242 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied ten 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Elizabeth City State Recap
FSU came back from a halftime deficit to top the Lady Vikings on Monday. Amber Calvin scored a game-high 19 points and buried five foul shots in the final minute to help preserve a victory.
Deja Middleton (17 points, 15 rebounds) finished with her fifth double-double of the season.
Lincoln (PA) Scouting Report
The Lady Lions are under the direction third-year head coach Jessica Kern. Kern is 23-46 in her tenure with the Lady Lions and improved her win total from seven to 10 in her second season. With six wins in the early part of this season, she may improve upon her final record again.
Lincoln enters the game on the heels of an 0-3 road trip at Johnson C. Smith, Winston-Salem State and Livingstone. The Lady Lions are home for their next five games.
Cynthia Johnson (11.3 ppg) is the only Lincoln player averaging double-figure scoring. Zephrah Pam averages 9.2 rebounds per game, the third-highest mark in the CIAA.
All-Time Series With Lincoln (PA)
The Lady Broncos are 8-0 all-time against Lincoln. The teams met twice last year, including in the CIAA quarterfinals, when FSU eliminated the Lady Lions with a 60-46 win. Kristen Hanzer (15 points), Shuanda Ashford (12), Alicia Person (12) and Akysia Resper (10) all finished in double-figures in that contest.
Fayetteville State travels to Virginia Union on Saturday and Bowie State on Monday.
