HAMPTON, VA – Fayetteville State guard Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) was selected by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association as the Newcomer of the Week. The honor is bestowed from her performance last week in conference road victories over Chowan and Virginia State. Hanzer averaged 17 points and six rebounds in the two contests.
Hanzer, a transfer from UNC Wilmington, scored a total of 34 points combined and converted on 14-of-18 free-throw attempts. She had a team-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds in FSU’s 52-37 conference-opening win over Chowan. She followed that performance with 16 points and seven rebounds as Fayetteville State rallied in the second half to defeat Virginia State 57-51. Hanzer was successful on all ten of her free-throws against VSU.
For the season, Hanzer leads the conference in scoring at 19.6 points per game and is shooting 55% from the field and 74% at the charity stripe.
The CIAA Southern Division leader enters tonight’s matchup at Elizabeth City State with a 10-2 overall record
