FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team wraps up a season-long six-game road trip on Monday evening with a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Elizabeth City State Vikings at the RL Vaughan Center. The Lady Broncos are currently 4-1 on the road swing including a victory over then-17th ranked Nova Southeastern on Dec. 14. FSU returns home for three straight games beginning on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. against Lincoln (PA).
The Monday night showdown pits the two top teams in the CIAA this season. Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State sport identical 10-2 overall records and are both 2-0 in conference play. The Lady Broncos are coming off a 57-51 victory at Virginia State on Saturday afternoon while the Vikings were victorious over Saint Augustine’s 70-60. FSU is off to its first 2-0 start in conference action since the 2009-10 season, which was head coach Eva Patterson-Heath’s first year with the program.
Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) tallied a team-high 20 points in the win over Virginia State. The forward/center went 6-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) added 16 points and seven rebounds as the Lady Broncos outrebounded VSU 43-34.
Hanzer remains the leader for Fayetteville State on offense with 19.6 points per game. The transfer from UNC Wilmington is atop the scoring charts in the CIAA and is shooting 55% from the field. Ashford is first on the team in rebounding at 7.4 per game and second in scoring at 13.0. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) is dishing out a team-high 3.3 assists per game.
Shatara Jackson leads the Elizabeth City State in scoring at 13.5 points per game followed by Stephanie Harper at 11.9. Harper also has a team-best 6.8 rebounds per contest while Jackson posts 3.9 assists per game.
The matchup also features two of the top scoring offenses in the league. The Lady Broncos rank third with 73.7 points and the Vikings are second at 75.2 points. Fayetteville State is fifth in scoring defense allowing 58.9 points per game and Elizabeth City State is third giving up 56.2 points.
The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series over the Vikings 39-18. The series dates back to the 1981 season. Elizabeth City State won the last meeting 63-50 in Fayetteville on Jan. 9, 2012.

HARPER, ELIZABETH CITY STATE TOO MUCH FOR LADY BRONCOS
CIAA Player of the week Stephanie Harper scored 21 points and pulled down a game-high 25 rebounds as Elizabeth City State held off Fayetteville State 63-50 in women's basketball at Felton J. Capel Arena on Monday night.
Fayetteville State (6-6, 0-3), which led for much of the first half, fought back with an 8-2 spurt to creep within one, 46-45, with 6:38 to go, but the Lady Broncos could never regain the lead.
