LADY BRONCOS DROP ROAD TILT AT ELIZABETH CITY, 64-53
ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team was unable to find a second consecutive road victory.
Missed shots and turnovers cost the Lady Broncos in a 64-53 loss at Elizabeth City State. FSU's record now sits at 3-2.
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team looks to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss to Virginia State when it squares off with Elizabeth City State on Monday night at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos (8-3 overall, 1-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) also look to avenge a 64-53 loss at ECSU on Dec. 2. That game is one of just three wins this season for the Lady Vikings, who come into play 3-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
FSU nearly pulled off a comeback against Virginia State, but an intercepted pass, a missed layup and a technical foul ensured that come-from-behind effort would not be rewarded for a win.
Still, Deja Middleton continued to establish herself as one of the best players in the league. Middleton averages 13.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Against Virginia State, she had eight points and 12 rebounds. It was just the second contest when she hasn't scored in double-figures this year.
FSU is looking to get its 41st win in a series it has mostly dominated since the schools started playing in 1981.
Virginia State Recap
Akysia Resper had 18 points and Middleton had the aforementioned 12 rebounds in helping the Lady Broncos rally from a 14-point deficit, but late mistakes simply did FSU in. A turnover, a missed layup and a technical foul was enough ammo for the visiting Lady Trojans to hang onto a victory.
A rough start shooting (6-of-28) in the first half allowed VSU to have a running start. Coach Eva Patterson-Heath hopes her team runs out to a better start this time around.
Elizabeth City Scouting Report
Despite that earlier win against the Lady Broncos, the start of the season hasn't exactly gone according to plan. The Lady Vikings are just 3-8 on the season and have lost four games in a row.
In their first two conference games, the Lady Vikings fell victim to 67-39 and 67-57 defeats at Shaw and St. Augustine's, respectively.
The Lady Vikings rank last in the CIAA in points per game (53.6) and 11th in field-goal percentage (34.1 percent). They are fifth, however, in opponents points per game, at 63.3.
All-Time Series With Elizabeth City
The Lady Broncos hold a 40-19 advantage in the all-time series. This is the 60th match-up between these foes since 1981.
Fayetteville State is on the road for three games against Lincoln (Pa.), Virginia Union and Bowie State beginning on Thursday.
