FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team will look to start its CIAA season with two straight victories on Saturday afternoon against the Virginia State Trojans at Daniel Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be part of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team.

The Lady Broncos (9-2, 1-0) defeated the Chowan Hawks in their CIAA opener on Thursday evening 52-37. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) and Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) combined to score 34 of the team’s points led by Hanzer’s 18. Ashford added 16 including 10 in the second half. Fayetteville State finished the game with a 35.8% (19-of-53) shooting percentage and held the Hawks to a 22.9% (11-of-48) mark.

Hanzer, the conference’s leading scorer, is averaging 20.0 points per game on 76-of-136 (56%) shooting. She also contributes 5.4 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists. Ashford leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 per game and is second in scoring at 12.4. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) dishes out a team-high 3.3 assists per contest.

The Trojans (7-4, 0-1) dropped their conference opener to Saint Augustine’s 67-62 on Thursday. Virginia State was led on offense by Lamesha Deal with 16 points followed by Ashley Whitaker (15) and Alexander Massado (12). Virginia State shot 35.5% (22-of-62) from the field. Deal is the only Trojan scoring in double-figures this season.

The Lady Broncos are third in the league in scoring at 75.2 points per game and fifth in scoring defense holding opponents to 59.6 points per contest. The Trojans are sixth in the conference in scoring and second in scoring defense.

The all-time series between the two teams is tied 21-21 as Virginia State has won the last two meetings. Fayetteville State last defeated the Trojans on Feb. 26, 2010 by a 66-61 score in Charlotte during the CIAA Tournament.

The Lady Broncos stay on the road for the final game of their season-long six-game road trip on Monday, Jan. 7 against the Elizabeth City State Vikings. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

LADY BRONCOS FALL ON THE ROAD TO VIRGINIA STATE
PETERSBURG, Va. - LaMesha Deal scored a game-high 22 points to go with 10 rebounds to lead Virginia State to a 50-45 victory over Fayetteville State in women's basketball on Thursday night at Daniel Gym. The Lady Broncos (9-11, 3-8), who were coming off a stunning upset of then-league unbeaten Johnson C. Smith on Monday, held the Lady Trojans (12-11, 3-7) to just 33 percent shooting from the floor and led into the second half before a 7-0 run handed Virginia State a 37-32 lead with about 7 minutes to go.
