LADY BRONCOS RALLY IN SECOND HALF FOR 57-51 VICTORY AT VIRGINIA STATE
PETERSBURG, VA -Fayetteville State rallied in the second half to pick up a 57-51 victory over Virginia State on Saturday afternoon at Daniel Gymnasium. The battle was won via free throws as the Lady Broncos connected on 13-of-20 (65%) in the second half compared to a game total of 13 by the Trojans. Fayetteville native Shuanda Ashford scored a team-high 20 points for the Lady Broncos. FSU trailed at halftime 29-20.
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team aims for a 9-2 start and a 2-0 start in CIAA play when it takes on Virginia State on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos enter fresh off a 58-50 win at home against Chowan in which they never trailed and were never really challenged until the Hawks went on a 14-0 run to end the game and make the margin semi-close. Both Amber Calvin (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) and Deja Middleton (Jr., Richmond, VA) scored in double-figures in the win.
Fayetteville State's defense continues to key the Lady Broncos success. The Chowan game was the fifth time this year FSU has surrendered less than 50 points. FSU is second in the CIAA to Virginia State, giving up 51.8 points per game.
Despite not reaching the 10-rebound mark against Chowan and seeing her rebound average dip below 10 per game for the season, Middleton continues to lead the conference with 9.6 boards per game.
Calvin and Middleton also prove to be a dynamic duo offensively. They rank seventh and eighth, respectively, in the CIAA with 14.6 and 14.2 points per game scoring averages.
The Lady Broncos are in their 62nd season as a program and have compiled an all-time record of 588-399 and 332-241 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied ten 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Fayetteville State scored the game’s first 12 points to get out to an early lead and scored the first seven points after intermission to stretch its lead to 20. Chowan really had no chance after that.
The Hawks, to their credit, scored the game’s last 14 points to reduce what was a 22-point margin to its final eight-point deficit.
Virginia State Scouting Report
The Lady Trojans are led by seventh-year head coach James Hill, Jr. Under his tutelage, VSU has compiled a 109-75 record, including a 10-0 mark this year.
Like FSU, VSU is extremely good defensively. The Lady Trojans are the only team in the league to surrender fewer points per game than the Lady Broncos. They’ve given up just 48.2 points per game.
Lamesha Deal is the conference’s fourth-best rebounder, hauling in 8.6 rebounds per game. She also is a tremendous free throw shooter, shooting 96.0 percent from the stripe. She also averages 13.4 points per game, tops on the team.
Da’Shae Jones (11.6 ppg) and Tiffanie Adair (11.7 ppg) also average in double figures.
All-Time Series With Virginia State
The contest will be the 44th all-time between Fayetteville State and Virginia State.
The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series, 22-21.
FSU won last year’s meeting, 57-51, behind a second-half rally and 20 points from Shuanda Ashford.
Fayetteville State hosts Elizabeth City State at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
