FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team eyes to start both the new year and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference play with a victory on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. against the visiting Chowan Hawks. The Lady Broncos are currently in the midst of a four-game winning streak after sweeping the University of Tampa and Florida Southern at a tournament in Lakeland, Fla., on Dec. 20 and 21. FSU will play two more home games against Virginia State on Jan. 4 and Elizabeth City State on Jan. 6 before hitting the road to Lincoln (Pa.) on Jan. 9.
Fayetteville State’s defense was key in a 65-40 win over Florida Southern on Dec. 21 that closed out the 2013 calendar year. The Lady Broncos limited the Moccasins to 25.4-percent shooting (15-of-59) and forced 22 turnovers.
Amber Calvin (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) paced the FSU offense with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor and a 5-of-14 day from 3-point range. She also pulled down seven rebounds and recorded three assists and three steals.
Deja Middleton (Jr., Richmond, VA) continued her stellar defensive season by pulling down 13 rebounds and three shots. She also had 16 points to record yet another double-double, her fourth of the season.
The Lady Broncos enter the contest with a 7-2 overall record, the second-most wins and second-fewest losses in the conference. Nobody in the CIAA has played a conference game.
Middleton leads the CIAA in rebounds per game (10.1), is second in blocks per game (2.6) and ranks eighth in field goal percentage (50.0) and ninth in scoring (13.7 points per game).
Calvin ranks sixth in the league in scoring at 14.6 points per contest and is tied for second with 22 made 3-pointers.
FSU is seventh in the CIAA in scoring with 69.0 points per game and ranks second defensively by giving up 52.0 points per contest. The Lady Broncos are fifth in assists per game (15.1), first in steals (14.8), and fourth in blocks (4.1).
The Lady Broncos are in their 62nd season as a program and have compiled an all-time record of 587-399 and 331-241 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied ten 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Florida Southern Recap
Fayetteville State’s defense limited Florida Southern to 25.4 percent and turned 22 turnovers into 22 points.
Florida Southern never led in a contest that was dominated by the Lady Broncos throughout. Middleton and Calvin combined for 41 points, one more than FSU’s opponent.
Chowan Scouting Report
The Hawks are under the direction of tenth-year head coach Patrick Mashuda. Smith currently holds a 115-141 all-time record with the program, including a 6-4 mark this season.
Chowan is led on offense by Alisha Mobley’s 15.4 points per game. She is the only Hawk averaging double-figures.
Chowan ranks fourth in scoring at 72.5 points per game and eighth in scoring defense at 65.8 points per contest.
All-Time Series With Chowan
The contest will be the ninth all-time between Fayetteville State and Chowan dating back to the 2006 season.
The all-time series is tied at four wins apiece. Last year’s 52-37 Lady Broncos win snapped Chowan’s four-game win streak in the series.
Fayetteville State scored its victory on Jan. 3 in Murfreesboro, NC.
Kristen Hanzer (18) and Shuanda Ashford (16) nearly outscored the Hawks alone in that contest. Tierra Coleman had a team-high eight rebounds and scored six points.
Chowan only led once in that contest, by a point with 17:49 to play in the first half. FSU led by as much as 21 points and won convincingly despite not making a field goal after the 5:29 mark.
FSU outscored Chowan in the paint, 18-8, in that match-up.
