Morrow, GA - Fayetteville State University lost their second women's basketball contest on Sunday in the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic as the Clayton State University Lakers rolled to a 79-64 victory in Morrow, GA. Clayton State came into the match-up ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II national poll. The Lakers top producers were Lisa Jackson, who scored a career-high 21 points and Lynette Jackson, who scored 15 points with seven rebounds and five blocked shots. FSU began the contest without sophomore guard Antoinette Smith, whose nursing a leg injury. To make matters worse junior guard Jamara McMillan left the game early in the first half after suffering an ankle injury. Despite the absence of two key backcourt contributors, the Lady Broncos remained competitive and were in contention in the opening period. There were six ties and five lead changes in the first half before Clayton State took control of the game with a 16-0 run. Fayetteville State went into the locker room at halftime down 41-27. The Lady Broncos came out in the second half more aggressive on the offensive glass attempting to narrow Clayton State's advantage. A lay-up by senior guard Leticia Dickson cut the Lakers' lead to 53-46 with 13:03 remaining, but that was as close as the Lady Broncos would get. Clayton State responded with a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes that pretty much sealed the win for the Lakers. A three-pointer from Dominique Jennings at the 5:52 mark then gave Clayton State a 72-50 lead, their largest of the game at 22 points. Dickson scored a team-high 19 points, while sophomore guard L' Oreal Price added 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals. As a team, the Lady Broncos shot a disappointing 28.2% from the field on 24-of-85 shooting.
With the loss, FSU's record falls to 5-5 overall this season. The Lady Broncos face another opponent on the road as they travel to Bowie, MD on January 3rd for CIAA competition against the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm. |
