MOUNT OLIVE, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team returned to the court on Sunday afternoon and suffered a 78-71 road defeat to the Mount Olive Trojans at Kornegay Arena. Three Lady Broncos scored in double-figures as their winning streak of six games comes to an end.
Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) led the Lady Broncos in scoring with 20 points, while Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) tallied her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Britney Whitehead (Sr., Enfield, NC) scored a career-high 12 points off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting.
Fayetteville State falls to 8-2 on the season, while Mount Olive improves to 8-1 overall. The Lady Broncos will remain on the road for their fourth game of a six-game road swing. FSU opens CIAA competition against the Chowan Hawks on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
Kirksten Mitchell scored a game-high 23 points for the Mt. Olive and was one of three players to score in double-figures. Tamara Nesmith collected 18 points and Joneiqua Gary added 15.
Hanzer's ten points in the first half paced the Fayetteville State offense as it headed into intermission trailing 37-26. The Lady Broncos managed to convert on just 10 of their 28 field goal attempts (35.7%) as Mount Olive pressured FSU into 15 first-half turnovers. The Trojans took advantage of the turnovers turning them into 21 points. Mount Olive shot 44.4% (12-of-27) from the floor led by Mitchell's 13 points.
The Trojans jumped out to a 14-4 lead to start the game. Fayetteville State fought back to cut its deficit to four points (22-18). Mount Olive finished the half on a 15-8 run.
The Lady Broncos improved their shooting percentage in the second half to 51.4% on 18-of-35 attempts from the floor. Hanzer added another ten points for Fayetteville State. FSU recovered in the second half outscoring Mount Olive 45-41 while leading 26-14 in points in the paint.
The Trojans finished the half 13-of-28 (46.4%) shooting and were successful on three of their four three-point attempts. Mount Olive pushed its lead to a game-high 21 points with 14:41 left in the game. The Lady Broncos fought back late to cut their deficit to five points at 72-67. That would be as close as Fayetteville State would get as the Trojans converted free-throws to seal the game.
The Lady Broncos finished the game shooting 44.4% (28-of-63) from the field while Mount Olive shot 45.5% (25-of-55) overall.
Fayetteville State will travel to Murfreesboro for a CIAA matchup against Chowan on January 3rd at 5:30 pm.
