Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University dropped their match-up against Lander College 108-92 in the opening women's competition of the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic hosted by Clayton State University in Morrow, GA.
Lander had five players finish with double figures in points, including guard LaShonda Chiles game-high 24 point performance. The Lady Bearcats outscored FSU inside the paint 62-42.
Fayetteville State went into halftime down 52-45, largely due to Lander being sent to the free throw and converting those opportunities. The Lady Bearcats shot 83 percent from the charity stripe in the first half, sinking 10 of 12 attempts. FSU also shot well from the free throw line; however their 75 percent was on 3-of-4 shooting.
In the second half, Lander came out very aggressive and determined to extend their advantage. The Lady Bearcats shot 61.5 percent (24-of-39) from the field in comparison to the Lady Broncos disappointing 36.7 percent (18-of-49). Lander maintained a double-digit lead through most of the second half and improved their overall record to 6-4.
FSU produced an overall team effort in scoring with six players finishing with double-digit point totals. Sophomore guards Tressa Aughburns and Patricia Holmes came off the bench and scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. Senior forward Tenisha McArthur concluded the contest with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and three steals; 2 rebounds shy of her third double-double of the season.
The Lady Broncos fall to 5-4 overall after losing their fourth consecutive game. FSU returns to action on Sunday, December 30th against Clayton State University in the final day of the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
