Free Throws Sink Fayetteville State Women in 57-53 Loss to Chowan

Fayetteville, NC- Free-throws made a big difference in Fayetteville State’s 57-53 conference loss to Chowan in women’s basketball.

Both teams matched each other play-for-play for most of the game with Chowan (10-1, 2-0 CIAA) enjoying a nine-point (28-19) lead with1:55 left in the half and a four-point (30-26) halftime advantage.

Fayetteville State (4-4 overall, 0-1 CIAA) battled through the third quarter to trail 41-39 at the end of the period.  

After falling to another nine-point deficit, 50-41, Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) sparked an 8-1 run for FSU that ended with a Noni Kuumba (Tracy, CA) layup and a possible three-point play from a foul.

Down by two (51-49) with a little over a minute left, Kuumba missed the free throw.

After a pair of Hawks’ free-throws (53-49), Courtney Best (Raleigh, NC) grabbed her own rebound from a missed shot and tipped it in with 26 seconds left in the game.



Once again, down by two points (53-51), Chowan nailed four (4) consecutive free throw shots to secure the game.

Shantel Bennett had a team-high 12 points. Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY) had nine. Courtney Best led the bench unit with eight (8) points in six (6) minutes.

Fayetteville State was 9-of-19 in free throws (47.4%) while the Hawks made 14 of 22 (63.6%).

Three Chowan players scored in double digits. Mariah Coker had a game-high 17 points. Danielle Weldon finished 11 points and Dhyamond Crenshaw with ten. Chantel Roberts had a game-high 15 rebounds.

Fayetteville State will face another 10-win conference opponent in Virginia State on Saturday, December 16th. The women will play the first game of the doubleheader at 2 pm. Admission is FREE to all patrons.
