ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team was unable to find a second consecutive road victory.
Missed shots and turnovers cost the Lady Broncos in a 64-53 loss at Elizabeth City State. FSU's record now sits at 3-2.
Deja Middleton led the Lady Broncos with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sequoia Morton also recorded a double-double, going for 12 and 11, respectively. Those two combined for 23 of FSU's 39 rebounds.
The Lady Broncos were forced to play from behind early after the Lady Vikings scored nine of the game's first 11 points in the first 7:12. FSU responded by cutting the gap to 12-8 with 10:51 to go in the first half. A Morton layup at the 7:28 mark drew FSU within 16-14.
After Bria Robinson made it 22-17 Elizabeth City with 5:23 left in the first half, the Lady Vikings scored nine points in a row to stretch the gap to 31-17. It was 36-22 at the half. FSU outscored Elizabeth City in the paint 14-10 in the period (and 34-24 in the game) and 4-2 in transition.
Despite FSU opening the second half with a Middleton layup, the Lady Vikings responded with a 13-6 run to go ahead 49-30. Elizabeth City took a 22-point lead at 54-32, but FSU immediately responded with a 9-0 run to get back within 13.
The Lady Broncos cut the gap to nine when JeLena Robertson made a pair of free throws with 2:54 to go. That made it 58-49, but the Lady Vikings went on a 6-2 run to escape with the victory.
Middleton scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half. She was 7 of 9 in the period with eight rebounds. Shaquanza Manning had nine points and recorded three steals.
The Lady Broncos are back in action on Saturday against Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday in Raleigh.
