Fayetteville, NC- The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team routed Morris College 81-40 to improve to 4-3 overall, Thursday evening in Capel Arena. Four Broncos scored in double figures while FSU won by 41 points.

Senior Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY) finished her sixth game scoring in double-digits with 16 points and five (5) rebounds. Junior Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) had what may have been her best night of the season with 16 points, eight (8) rebounds, and three (3) blocks. Shantel Bennett (Sophomore - Sanford, NC) added 11 points. Wing player Kayla Robinson (Winston-Salem, NC) had 14 points off the bench.

The Broncos were dominant from start to finish in tonight’s game, never surrendering the lead.

FSU was opportunistic all night scoring 28 points off 28 Hornets’ turnovers (a season-high for the Broncos for forced turnovers). The Broncos were also dominant in the paint, out-rebounding Morris 49-29 and outscoring the Hornets 48-20 in the paint.

“Our main goal was to hold them to 50,” said Broncos Head Coach Serena King-Coleman.  “We held them to 40… If we hold teams, we’ll always have a chance to win.”

The Broncos began the game on an 11-3 run. With the score at 11-5, FSU went on another run, this time a 10-2 run to increase the lead. The Broncos defense was really stout in the first quarter forcing eight (8) Hornets turnovers and holding the Morris to shoot 21% (3 of 14) from the field thanks to a pesky full-court defense from FSU.

The Broncos extended their lead to 45-25 to end the first half thanks to a 12-2 Broncos run that lasted more than six minutes. For nearly four minutes, the Hornets were held scoreless. At halftime, two (2) Bronco players were already in double-digits for scoring. Mosley and Clifton had 12 points each.

Coach King-Coleman also gave high praise to Clifton, “She makes our team even better. She takes us to another level. I was very proud of her start today.”

The Broncos continued their dominance coming out of halftime by going on a 17-2 run to close the third quarter. FSU was up 66-32 at the start of the fourth quarter. The Broncos poured it on even more in the fourth quarter. FSU’s defense did not let up as they allowed the Hornets to score only 15 points in the second half on 6 of 27 shooting. The Broncos scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone.

The FSU women’s basketball team will take a break for Fall exams and open conference play on December 14th at home versus Chowan.

Last week, the Fayetteville State women’s basketball team hosted their first ever FSU Broncos Thanksgiving Classic. The Broncos went 1-1, defeating Elizabeth City State and losing to Chowan 75-55.
