Ettrick, VA - The Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos snatched their third win of the season with a 78-71 victory over the Lady Trojans of Virginia State Tuesday evening inside Daniel Gymnasium.
Senior forward Tenisha McArthur was two rebounds shy of turning in her third double-double performance of the season; finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds. With the win FSU improves to 3-0 overall and earn their first victory in the CIAA.
Head coach Eric Tucker was unable to make the trip due to family matters. Assistant Coach Mike Rich had the Lady Broncos operating well on both ends of the floor in the contest. FSU led 40-27 at halftime and pushed their lead to 22 points by the 14:36 mark of the second half.
Fayetteville State outscored VSU 42-30 inside the paint. Freshman forward Saybah Sammy was a big part of the Lady Broncos dominant post play. Sammy shot 71% from the free throw line (5-for-7) and finished with 13 points, two rebounds, and two steals playing around the basket.
The Lady Trojans battled back in the second half, cutting the lead to six after a layup from Katania Walker at the 5:04. Walker finished with a game-high 17points and played the entire game.
FSU fought off the come back by answering Virginia State scores down the stretch. Newcomers L' Oreal Price and Leticia Dickson both scored eight points and sophomore guard Antoinette Smith had a double digit point total with 10 to go along with four assists and three steals.
The Lady Broncos will take the floor again on Tuesday, December 4th at 5:30pm against another CIAA opponent Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA.
