Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's basketball team picked up their first win at home and in the conference with a 77-67 victory over Virginia Union University Tuesday evening inside Capel Arena. FSU improves to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the CIAA, while the Lady Panthers fall to 2-2 in the overall standings and 0-1 in the conference.
Junior guard L' Oreal Price led the Lady Broncos charge with 15 points and 11 rebounds (9 offensive). Freshman center Deja Middleton produced a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore center Tiffany Haywood had a full day adding 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Throughout the contest, Fayetteville State outscored V. Union inside the paint 30-to-18.
For Virginia Union, forward Tonaey Smith led all scorers with 19 points. Center Samantha Stevens finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Panthers. Guards Latasia Robinson and Ashley Hill added 11 and 10 points, respectively for V. Union.
The score remained close in the first half. There were four ties and three lead changes. FSU's largest lead was eight points, seven minutes into the ball game. VUU committed 20 first half turnovers compared to just 12 for Fayetteville State. Coach Eric Tucker and his Lady Broncos went into halftime up 36-30.
The Lady Panthers started the second half on a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead. After some back and forth scoring by both teams, FSU would eventually tie and take the lead off two free throws by junior guard Antoinette Smith.
After a miss and a make at the free throw line by junior guard Danielle Russell, the Lady Broncos led 57-51 with 8:19 remaining. Fayetteville State would not relinquish their lead and closed the game out on solid throw shooting. Foul trouble continued to plague the Lady Panthers in the contest. All five starters fouled out in the second half. FSU was sent to the line 40 times compared to 23 for V. Union.
The Lady Panthers gave up 31 points off 36 turnovers. Fayetteville State out-rebounded VUU 53-to-40 and scored 26 points off second chance opportunities.
The Lady Broncos will travel to Raleigh, NC to face Saint Augustine's College on Saturday, November 29th. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm inside the Emery Gymnasium.
