BUCKHANNON, WVA - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team stampeded West Virginia Wesleyan 90-79 with a one-two balanced attack in Buckhannon, WVA. The Lady Broncos scored 27 of the game's first 35 points to take a 27-8 first half lead and close it out 41-34 at halftime.
Both teams battled back-and-fourth in the second half with Wesleyan controlling a petite lead at 44-41. FSU generated a 10-4 run to recapture the game at 81-72 and make eight-of-ten free throws for the 90-79 victory.
Senior guard Kristen Hanzer scored a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Three other Lady Broncos scored in double-figures with Shuanda Ashford netting 18 points, Tierra Coleman with 13 and Akysia Resper with 11.
Hanzer (Youngsville, NC) scored on 11 field goals on 21 attempts and finished one rebound shy of a season-first double-double. Her scoring opportunities increased with six offensive boards (3 defensive) and six steals.
Resper (Concord, NC) made two-of-six attempts from the field and six-of-eight from the free throw line.
Ashford (Fayetteville, NC) worked the paint with 9-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds. Fellow forward, Coleman (Cameron, NC) tipped in six-of-seven from down low and snatched eight rebounds.
Fayetteville State made 20-of-31 free throws for the game and forced WVa Wesleyan into 22 turnovers.
The Lady Bobcats of WVWC were led by Brittany Maxey (23 points), Danesha Richardson (14) and Atavia Blake (13).
The Lady Broncos will play host to Virginia University of Lynchburg in a double-header on Tuesday, November 27 at 5:30 pm.
