Fayetteville State Women Crushes Paine, 68-51

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University (2-2 overall) women’s basketball team beat the Paine Lions 68-51, Tuesday evening in Capel Arena.

Senior forward Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY) led the Broncos with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) was second among the Broncos in points with 12 and 4 rebounds. Junior guard Noni Kuumba (Tracy, CA) came off the bench to contribute 10 points and 4 assists.

In a fast-paced full-court pressure type of game, the Broncos scored 20 fast break points and 22 points off 22 Lion turnovers. FSU out-rebounded Paine 48-34, had 23 offensive boards for 25 second-chance points and a whopping 50 points in the paint versus Paine’s 26.

Fayetteville State opened the game on an 8-3 run and extended their lead to 14-7, by being active on both ends of the floor.  With less than a minute to go, the Lions went on a 5-0 run to end the first quarter down 14-12.

Paine tied the game, 14-14, early in the second quarter; however, the Broncos finished the half on a 13-5 run over the course of eight (8) minutes and a 29-19 halftime lead.  FSU forced ten (10) turnovers with its stout full-court press and held the Lions to 3-of-10 shooting.



Paine fought back in the third quarter cutting the Bronco lead down to five (39-34) behind the efforts of Keondra Archie and Tania Ward. Archie finished the game with 15 points along with Ward’s ten (10). The Lions went on the 7-0 run before Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) exploded with eight (8) points to stymie a potential Paine comeback.

In the fourth quarter, Fayetteville State pulled away, outscoring the Lions 25-15. The Broncos dominated in the paint, scoring 16 points and put back 13 points off second-chance opportunities. During a 13-4 run, the lead extended from 45-36 to 58-40. With less than three minutes to go, FSU led by as many as 20 points (64-44).

Fayetteville State will host its first-ever FSU Broncos Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 24th and Saturday the 25th. Saint Augustine’s University will open the classic in a non-conference game against cross-divisional opponent Chowan at 4 p.m. The Broncos will take on Elizabeth City State at 6 p.m. The Falcons will start the second day against ECSU at 2 p.m. and FSU will see Chowan at 4 p.m.
