AUGUSTA, GA – Fayetteville State guard Alicia Person and forward Shuanda Ashford scored 14 points apiece to lead the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos to a 67-53 road victory against the Paine College Lady Lions on Tuesday evening. The 14 points scored by Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) are a season-high while Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) recorded her first double-double of the season after adding 10 rebounds.
The Lady Broncos improve to 3-1 on the season, and the Lady Lions fall to 2-2. FSU pick up its second win in a row on the road after winning 90-88 in come-from-behind fashion against Catawba on Nov. 13.
Fayetteville State has now won its last two contests on the hardwood against Paine. The Lady Broncos captured a 78-60 victory over the Lady Lions last season in Fayetteville.
Fayetteville State headed into halftime holding a 36-23 lead after shooting 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from the field while holding the Lady Lions to just 33.3 percent (9-for-27) overall. The Lady Broncos held their largest lead of the half at 13 points after a Serena Hall (Jr., Virginia Beach, VA) layup with 1:18 left. The basket capped an opening stanza for FSU in which it produced 18 points in the paint, and forced 16 turnovers that led to 12 points.
Paine missed all eight of its three point attempts and went 5-of-13 (38.5%) at the free-throw line. Ashford finished with a team-high 11 points in the first half. Kiara Johnson led the Lady Lions with 11 points.
The Lady Broncos led by double-digits during a majority of the second half, including a game-high 16-point advantage at the 1:10 mark when Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) made a layup to put them up 67-51. Paine kept its deficit even throughout the second half despite making just one three-pointer on eight attempts. The Lady Lions posted a 44.4 percent (12-for-27) clip from the field, and added 12 bench points and eight second-chance points.
Fayetteville State used size to its advantage in the second half outscoring Paine 14-8 in the paint and forced it into 11 more turnovers that led to 10 points. The Lady Broncos received another solid half from their bench recording 12 points. Je’Lena Robertson (Jr., Houston, TX) came off the bench for five points in the second period as Person scored a team-best eight points on 4-of-6 shooting. Johnson and Lashonda Canty contributed six points each for the Lady Lions.
FSU shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) as a team while Paine went 21-of-54 (38.9%) from the field. Fayetteville State recorded 18 steals, led by three each from Person and Robertson, and Paine managed just six. The Lady Broncos had all but two players register a basket. A total of 12 total players logged minutes for FSU.
Fayetteville State will remain on the road for its next contest against the West Virginia-Wesleyan Bobcats on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
