Pembroke, NC - The Lady Broncos established a presence inside to pick up a 90-76 road victory over UNC-Pembroke Thursday night in the English E. Jones Center. Four scored in double figures for Fayetteville State in their first win of the season.
FSU was dominant from the opening tip. The Lady Broncos had the lead for the majority of the first half. Pembroke shot themselves into a hole with off target long-range shooting. UNCP took 31 shots in the opening period, 16 were three-pointers. The Lady Braves shot 29% from the field (9-of-31) and 25% from behind the arc (4-of-16).
Fayetteville State showed discipline and consistency by feeding the post for high percentage opportunities. Freshman center Deja Middleton moved into the starting up and it paid dividends early. At the half, Middleton had nine points and three steals. Sophomore center Tiffany Haywood paced all FSU scorers with 10 points, shooting 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Lady Braves trailed 42-30 going into the second half. FSU produced 28 points in the paint in the first half, compared to just six points for Pembroke.
Coach Eric Tucker did not switch up the game plan at the half; FSU continued to go inside. UNCP continued to have their shooting woes also. Pembroke, who was down by as much as 18 at one point, eventually got within nine of the Lady Bronco with 7:52 remaining. But the Lady Broncos stayed the course and fought off any momentum building with solid post play.
Fayetteville State scored 50 inside the paint, 19 off second chance opportunities, and 37 points came from off the bench. UNCP had most of their success off fast breaks, outscoring the Lady Broncos 21-0 in transition.
Haywood finished with a game-high 17 points, along with seven rebounds. Junior guard Chelsea Jeter contributed with 15 points, eight boards, and two steals. Junior guard L' Oreal Price (a transfer from UNC-Pembroke) returned to the Jones Center and dropped 14 points. Middleton concluded the contest with 11 points, four rebounds, and four steals before fouling out.
JaToya Kemp was the Lady Braves leading scorer with 12 points off the bench. Natalie Ray pitched in 10 points and three players finished with nine points in the loss.
The Lady Broncos improve to 1-1 overall, while UNC-Pembroke drop to 1-1. FSU returns to action on Saturday, November 22nd when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm inside the Capel Arena.
