Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos took the lead in their contest against the Lady Braves of UNC-Pembroke Tuesday evening in Capel Arena and held on to it throughout for a 76-72 victory. Senior forward Tenisha McArthur put in her second double-double performance of the season (12 points/12 rebounds game one). McArthur had a team-high 12 points, 11 rebounds (7 defensive), two blocks, and two steals. FSU got off to a fast start in the first half; jumping out to a 16 point lead with a little less than four minutes played. Sophomore Randi' Watts had eight points in the first half for the Lady Broncos; which contributed to their 46-34 halftime lead over the Lady Braves. Watts finished with 10 points and four rebounds on 5-for-10 shooting. UNC-Pembroke came out in the second half regrouped and ready. Senior Victoria Willis and red shirt freshman Chevoya Jackson led the late charge, combining for 23 of the 38 second half points for UNC-Pembroke. Coach Eric Tucker called a timeout at the 5:33 mark with the score 64-63 to regroup before FSU lost their lead. The Lady Braves would not come any closer as Fayetteville State maintained control with clutch free throw shooting and points off of turnovers down the stretch. The Lady Broncos shot 65.6 percent from the free throw line in the game and outscored UNCP 22-13 in points off turnovers. Sophomore Tressa Aughburns contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds to the win; and junior guard Jamara McMillan finished with 11 points.
FSU improves to 2-0 for the season, while UNC-Pembroke is 0-1 losing their season opener. The next contest for the Lady Broncos will be on the road against CIAA competition; as Fayetteville State University takes on Virginia State University Tuesday, November 27th in Ettrick, VA. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm. |
