Free Throws Lift Coker to a 56-51 Win over Fayetteville State

Hartsville, SC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team erased a ten-point deficit in the third quarter to set itself up for a thrilling ending, but the Broncos fell 56-51 at Coker College. Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) led FSU (1-2 overall) with 13 points, making 4-of-6 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY) also scored in double-figures with a dozen points.

The Cobras (2-2 overall) opened the non-conference matchup with a five-point run to lead 12-5 and finish the quarter with a 15-10 advantage. A competitive second quarter led to a 22-19 halftime score in favor of Coker.

After the 10-point lead (29-19) with 6:53 left in the third, Bennett scored her first two free throws to start a 5-0 run that cut the score to 29-24. Mosley chipped in two of her 12 points while Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) added a free throw. Bennet would go on to nail five points in combination with Chi-Chi Maduegbnam’s (Charlotte, NC) four to tie the game for the first time at 33-33. Bennett’s layup with 25 seconds left in the period would give FSU its first lead (39-37) of the game at the end of the period. The third quarter had a total of three score ties.

Coker climbed back ahead by five (46-41) at the 5:39 mark before the Broncos knotted the game at 48 with 1:18 left and the sixth tied score. After the eighth tie (51-51), with 35 seconds left, the Cobras made its final six free throws to take the 56-51 victory.


 

 

Fayetteville State will host Paine College on Tuesday, November 21st in Capel Arena. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
