Kristen Hanzer led all with 24 points

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - UNC Pembroke's Jazmine Kemp hit two free throws with 1.35 seconds left to lift the Braves 72-70 past Fayetteville State in Felton J. Capel Arena. Kemp led the game with a total of 15 points and was perfect from the free throw line with seven. The Lady Broncos (2-1 overall) held the lead for the majority of the game but failed to manage it. The lead changed 12 times and was tied 14. Kristen Hanzer was the only Lady Bronco to score in double figures with 24. FSU led at halftime 41-35.
Fayetteville State worked the game from the post position out-performing UNCP, 36-22. FSU forced UNC Pembroke (2-2 overall) into 17 turnovers and nine unforced. The Lady Broncos scored 25 points off turnovers.
The slim difference in the game came from the free throw line and second chance opportunities. UNC Pembroke had the better percentage from the charity stripe when comparing 81.3% to 77.8%. The Braves made 26-of-32 while the Lady Broncos converted 14-of-18. UNCP grabbed nine more rebounds than FSU; scoring 14 second chance points to the Lady Broncos 11.
Pembroke had 35 total rebounds with 25 of them coming from the defensive boards. The Lady Broncos had 26 boards which broke down to 10 offensive and 16 defensive.
Kristen Hanzer - a senior from Youngsville, NC - made 7-of-16 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. She also dished out four assists and put back two blocks. Shuanda Ashford, a 6-1 senior from Fayetteville, hit one of the Lady Broncos two three-pointers which contributed to her total of nine points. She also led the teams' efforts on the boards with eight rebounds. Bria Robinson (sophomore - Charlotte, NC) and Alicia Person (senior - Henderson, NC) also scored nine points.
Courtney Bolton and Wayne Mack contributed 11 points each to assist the Braves. The two matched each other again at the free throw line making five-of-six. Amelia Partin also scored in double figures with ten points.
The game slipped away from Fayetteville State at the five-minute mark. The Lady Broncos created a five-point (66-61) cushion but the Braves performance at the line erased it. Jazmine Kemp converted a three-point play for the game's 12th tie (66-66) at 4:24.
UNC Pembroke eased ahead by two with 1:41 left but Shuanda Ashford would tie the game at 70 with her final points of the game with 13 seconds left.
With hopes of sending the game into overtime, the atmosphere in Felton J. Capel Arena deflated when Ashord was whistled for her fifth personal foul with 1.35 seconds left. UNCP made seven of nine free throws in the closing stretch.
The first half of the game was a battle from jump ball. The lead switched seven times during the half and was deadlocked five. FSU managed a lead of nine points but it decreased to six (41-35) at intermission.
The Lady Broncos production in the post more than doubled that of the Braves. FSU scored 22 points in the paint compared to ten of UNCP. Kristen Hanzer led the half with ten points with Alicia Person and Bria Robinson both scoring seven.
Fayetteville State will travel to Augusta, GA on Tuesday, November 20 for a 7 pm matchup against Paine College. UNC Pembroke will host Queens University on Monday, November 19.
