Kristen Hanzer made of 7-of-10 field goals in 19 minutes

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Basketball season is here! This evening, the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos christened Felton J. Capel Arena with a 90-57 victory over Barber-Scotia. Transfer senior Kristen Hanzer led the baptism with a game high 18 points. The remaining starting back-court of Akysia Resper and Alicia Person also scored in double-figures with 12 and 10 points respectfully. FSU led 43-27 at the half.
"Our pressure defense set the tone for the game forcing them into 31 total turnovers", said Head Coach Eva Patterson-Heath. "We did a good job on offense sharing the ball with 23 assists.
Kristen Hanzer (Youngsville, NC) led the effort in the first half with nine points. With limited action after intermission, she quickly made 3-of-4 from the field and the same from the charity stripe for nine more points. Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) chipped in 3-of-5 from the post for a first half seven points. Ashford grabbed a team high eight boards for the game. Five of them were defensive.
Pre-season All-CIAA Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC), who started at point guard, took control in the second half scoring ten of her 12 points. She converted four of her six fields goals with one of them being the team's only three-pointer of the game. Resper dished out a total seven assists. On the receiving end of most of Resper's assists was Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC).
FSU shot 56.3% (18-of-32) from the floor and scored 20 points from the Lady Sabers 16 turnovers in the first half. Follow the break, the Lady Broncos continued the pressure on defense forcing BSC into 15 more turnovers. The team kept its consistency with 57.6% (19-of-32) shooting from the field.
Fayetteville State will travel to Salisbury, NC on Tuesday, November 13 for a 7:00 pm matchup with Catawba.
