In the second round of the 32nd Annual Women's Basketball Tournament, fifth seeded Bowie State University squared off against fourth seeded Fayetteville State University in the early (1:00 p.m.) match-up. Bowie State's post players lead the Lady Bulldogs past the Lady Broncos 76-68.

During regular-season, the Lady Broncos defeated BSU convincingly in both contests. Fayetteville State's full-court press plagued the Lady Bulldogs and forced them into 36 turnovers in each game.

Bowie State went on a 6-0 run during a three minute span to put the game in their favor for the remainder of the half. BSU reached its largest first half lead of 10 points with 4:20 remaining in the first period. Fayetteville State did not fold after the run. The Lady Broncos' defensive pressure forced BSU into 20 turnovers for the half.

However, Bowie State controlled the boards pulling down 18 defensive rebounds and overall out-rebounding the Lady Broncos 27-12 at the half. Allyson Swailes scored 12 first half points, leading all scorers at halftime, shooting 80 percent (4-5) from the field and 100 percent (4-4) from the free throw line. Her efforts in the first half resulted in a 33-26 lead at the half for the Lady Bulldogs.

By the 12:29 mark of the second half, Bowie State had reached a 51-35 lead despite increasing their turnover count. FSU got the lead to underneath double-digits with a score by Antoinette Smith. Smith's score sparked a 7-2 run to put the Lady Broncos within three (63-60) with 3:43 remaining. The persistence of the Lady Broncos defensive pressure forced BSU to commit a season high 51 turnovers for the game. Fayetteville State took advantage of the earned opportunities and scored 43 points off those turnovers.

The Lady Broncos could not draw any closer than three, and BSU continued to go inside to their post area in the second half of the game. Swailes finished with a game-high 20 points before eventually fouling out in the second half. Teammate Markeya Watson scored 14 points and ended with the game-high in rebounds with nine.

Jamara McMillan led all Fayetteville State scorers with 16 points, along with eight steals, and three assists. Smith produced 13 points and five steals for the Lady Broncos; while Chelsea Jeter's efforts accounted for 12 points, five rebounds and five steals.

The Lady Broncos finish the season with an 18-10 overall record, and plenty of youthful, savvy players potentially for next year's team.
