WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In a game that meant little to Fayetteville State's seeding in the upcoming CIAA Tournament, Winston-Salem State prevailed 80-55 over the Lady Broncos in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday at the C.E. Gaines Center.
Fayetteville State (12-14, 5-11, 4-6), which was locked into the Southern Division's No. 4 seed no matter the outcome on Saturday, will likely play the North's No. 5 seed, Chowan, in the opening round on Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. Game times and final pairings will not be announced until Sunday. Chowan defeated Fayetteville State 66-54 on Jan. 7 in Fayetteville.
Alicia Person (So., Henderson, N.C.) led Fayetteville State with 13 points while DaQuondra Cuthbertson (Jr., Spencer, N.C.) added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Jasmine Newkirk led five players in double figures with 13 points. Jordhan Peterson had 12 points and a game-high 17 boards.
The Lady Broncos, who have doubled their win total from a season ago, hung with the Lady Rams (17-9, 12-4, 6-4) in the opening minutes, trailing just 9-8 5 minutes into the game. But Winston-Salem State began methodically building the lead from there, leading by 10, 28-18, with 4:32 remaining in the first half.
Winston-Salem State, which shot better than 49 percent in the opening period, led 40-26 at the half.
The Lady Broncos made the Lady Rams earn the victory, though, using a 9-0 run early in the second half to cut the deficit to eight, 43-35, with under 16 minutes remaining.
But Winston-Salem State responded with a 7-0 spurt, and though Fayetteville State was able to get back within 12, the Lady Rams regain control late in the game, leading 68-51 with 3:07 left.
