Fayetteville State Goes Undefeated in the South with an 87-52 Win Over St. Augustine's

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team defeated Saint Augustine's, 87-52, in Capel Arena to finish 10-0 in the CIAA Southern Division.

The last time the Broncos went undefeated in divisional play was in 2003-04.

Fayetteville State (16-9 Overall, 11-5 CIAA) honored its three seniors, Breona Jones (Henderson, NC), Courtney Best (Raleigh, NC) and Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY), after celebrating its 12th divisional title.

Breona Jones will never forget today's game as she joined the 1,000-Point Club with 9:12 left in the game. Jones began her career at Elizabeth City State University where she played two seasons before transferring. While a Viking, Jones scored 520 points in 48 games. She needed 14 points to reach the plateau before the regular season expired and while a hometown following was present to honor her as a senior.


Jones led the first period with seven points as Fayetteville State led 15-10. She finished the half with nine as the pace of the game picked up and the Broncos out-scored the Falcons 28-11 going into halftime.
The game attendees enjoyed a special treat at halftime with the precision performance of the United States Army Drill Team from Fort Myer, Va.

Following intermission and a 43-21 lead, Breona Jones needed five points to reach her milestone. In the third period, she netted four which left her one away.
With the fourth quarter underway, Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) stole the Falcons first possession and dished it to Jones. Breona missed the layup. On the subsequent possession, fellow senior Courtney Best stole an offensive rebound from Saint Augustine's and initiated a fast break. Best handed off the possession to Jones as she floated the layup for her 1,001 point. A timeout was immediately called by Head Coach Serena King-Coleman as the team celebrated and congratulate Breona on the milestone.
Jones finished as the game-leader with 17 points and has a cumulative total of 1,003 points heading into the CIAA Tournament.
Senior Jamesha Mosley finished with 13 points. Courtney Best had 11 and three assists. Shantel Bennett also finished with 11 points while Yakima Clifton scored nine points and pulled down 16 rebounds. Clifton also dished out seven assists.
Saint Augustine's (7-18 overall, 4-12 CIAA, 3-7 Division) shot 26.6% from the floor and was forced into 25 turnovers. Fayetteville State out-rebounded the Falcons 46-37 and scored 34 points off turnovers. The Broncos had a total of 20 fast break points to SAU's four (4).
Kaaliya Williams led the Falcons with 14 points and Paulette Addison shadowed with 11 points.
Heading into the tournament with the South's No. 1 seed, the Broncos will receive a BYE round and will play its first game of the tournament on Wednesday.
