Final Stats

Charlotte, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s basketball team suffered a 69-50 loss to Bowie State University on Tuesday, February 21st during the opening round of the 2017 CIAA Tournament held at the Bojangles Coliseum. FSU concludes the season 8-18 overall, 6-10 in the CIAA, and 4-6 in the Southern Division.

Fayetteville State shot 41.8% from the floor, making 20 of 48 shots; while the Lady Bulldogs shot 51.9% for the game, connecting on 27 of 52 shots. Bowie State shot 31% (5-16) from the three-point line, outscoring the Lady Broncos 15-0 from beyond the arc.

Both teams recorded identical 10-12 (83%) efforts from the free throw line. Bowie State also held a 30-25 advantage on the glass and took advantage of 21 FSU turnovers, outscoring the Lady Broncos 29-22 in the points off turnovers category.

BSU scored the first five points of the game, but the Lady Broncos recovered with a quick 5-0 run of their own all engineered by All-CIAA sophomore forward Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC). Unfortunately, Bowie State created some distance with an 11-3 run to close the first quarter with a 16-8 lead.

In the second, Fayetteville State fell into a double digit deficit due to turnovers and interior scoring by BSU. The Lady Bulldogs outscored FSU 16-8 in the paint and 10-3 off turnovers in the second quarter alone. The Lady Broncos trailed 35-20 at halftime.

Fayetteville State pulled within striking distance with a 10-2 run in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Lady Broncos outscored BSU 16-12 in the third, but still faced a 47-36 deficit entering the fourth.

Denver Clyde and Kiara Colston took over the fourth quarter for Bowie State, combining for 12 of BSU’s 22 points in the period. FSU held an 8-4 scoring advantage off points in the paint. However, the Lady Bulldogs held onto the victory and advanced to the next round.



Clyde led Bowie State with 17 points. Kiara Colston added 16 points, while Lisa Jing and Pere Alexander had 10 points apiece.

Clifton finished with a game-high 17 points, along with seven rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) and junior forward De’ Aira Smith (Godwin, NC) had eight points each. Jones and redshirt freshman guard Tajah Clark (Clayton, NC) also had three assists.

“We played better in the second half than in the beginning, but a 15-point deficit is tough to overcome in tournament play,” said head coach Serena King-Coleman. “We’re a really young team; however this experience is invaluable for our players moving forward. We closed out the regular season winning three of our last four; we have some strong pieces returning, so I’m optimistic about our future.”

The Lady Bulldogs, the #4 seed in the CIAA Northern Division improve to 20-7 with the win and will face the top seed in the Southern Division, Johnson C. Smith University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. inside Bojangles Coliseum. The Lady Broncos, the #5 seed in the CIAA Southern Division, finish their season at 8-18.
