Tuesday evening was senior night and the last home game of the 2006-2007 season for the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos' Basketball Team. The Lady Broncos squared off against the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University and won easily, 71-49. The Lady Golden Bulls committed a season-high 56 turnovers.
Fayetteville State took an early lead and never relinquished control. By the 12:44 mark in the first half, the Lady Broncos were on an 11-0 run. JCSU scored their first basket of the contest with 11:15 remaining in the first half. At halftime the score was 31-18 in favor of the Lady Broncos. By the end of the first half, Johnson C. Smith had committed 30 turnovers, allowed the Lady Broncos' bench to outscore their reserves 15-2, and given up 17 points off turnovers.
In the second half, Fayetteville State continued to dominate, expanding their lead to 31 with 7:13 left to play. JCSU's Shemika Jones was the only Lady Golden Bull to score in double figures with 19 points, along with seven rebounds and four steals. Demetria Bell had a game-high 17 rebounds (11 defensive), however Bell only finished with six points.
Freshman, guard and reserve Jocabia Lucas had a team-high 16 points in 13 minutes of action. Three other Lady Broncos finished with double-digit point totals. Sophomore, Chelsea Jeter had 15 points, seven rebounds, and eight steals. Shacovia Sheppard scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. In the last home game for Shayla Roberts, the senior guard scored 10 points.
With the victory, the Lady Broncos improve to 16-9 overall and 12-6 in the CIAA conference. Johnson C. Smith moves to 14-12 overall and 9-10 in the CIAA. The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos will play their next game against the St. Augustine College Lady Falcons. The game will take place Thursday, February 22, 2007 in Raleigh, NC. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
