FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The 18th-ranked Fayetteville State Lady Broncos fell to the 20th-ranked Shaw Lady Bears 75-65 on Wednesday evening in a battle of the top two teams in the CIAA Southern Division. The Lady Broncos honored nine seniors following the contest as it was the final regular season game at Felton J. Capel Arena. Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) scored a team-high 17 points for FSU on 8-of-14 shooting.

Ashford was one of three players for Fayetteville State (21-4 overall, 13-2 CIAA, 7-2 Division) to score in double figures. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) and Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) recorded 15 points each while Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) added ten.

The Lady Broncos trailed Shaw (21-4, 12-3, 7-2) 37-28 at halftime despite shooting 38.2 percent (13-of-34) from the floor. The Lady Bears went 13-of-35 (37.1%) in the half and were successful on 9-of-14 free throw attempts; FSU attempted only one free-throw in the opening half.

Ashford scored the game's first six points as Fayetteville State jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes of action. Shaw stayed within striking distance and took a six-point lead of its own at 16-10 less than five minutes later. The Lady Bears would hold their largest lead of the half at 37-28 following two free throws with 31 seconds left.

Second-chance opportunities plagued Fayetteville State in the second half. The Lady Broncos were out-rebounded by Shaw 29-14; including a 15-4 advantage on the offensive boards. The 29 rebounds by the Lady Bears led to 11 second-chance points while FSU tallied just one point. Shaw also took advantage on the inside; outscoring the Lady Broncos 26-16 in points in the paint.

The Lady Bears led Fayetteville State for the entire second half. Shaw held a double-digit lead for a majority of the half; highlighted by a 60-46 advantage at the 7:21 mark. The Lady Broncos managed to cut their deficit to six (66-60) with 3:18 remaining but would not get closer. The Lady Bears held FSU to two field goals over the final 3:18.

 

 

Fayetteville State finished the game shooting 40.6 percent (26-of-64) while Shaw was 28-of-73 (38.4%) overall. The Lady Bears led in points in the paint (40-24), points off turnovers (17-12) and second-chance points (23-5).

Crystal Harris registered a game-high 18 points for Shaw while Crystal Wilson contributed 13. Isayra Diaz and Taylor Dalrymple had ten points apiece.

The Lady Broncos will conclude their 2012-13 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 23 when it travels to Raleigh to face the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
