Final Stats

Raleigh, NC -- The Fayetteville State University women's basketball team concluded the 2016-17 regular season with a 55-40 divisional victory over Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, February 18th. FSU improves to 8-17 overall, 6-10 in the CIAA, and 4-6 in the division; while the Lady Falcons fall to 3-25 overall, 0-16 in conference, and 0-10 in the division. The Lady Broncos enters the 2017 CIAA Tournament as the Southern No. 5 seed with a matchup against Bowie State on Tuesday, February 21st at 10:00 a.m.

Aside from the opening basket of the contest, SAU faced a deficit for the majority of the game. Following two free throws from sophomore guard Kayla Phifer (Greensboro, NC), the Lady Broncos held a 9-2 advantage with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter. The initial quarter closed with Fayetteville State ahead 13-8.

FSU extended their lead to double digits in the second quarter. The Lady Falcons were down 30-23 at half. Sophomore center Chinwendu Maduegbunam (Charlotte, NC) had nine points and four rebounds at the break. Sophomore forward Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) chipped in six points and four boards.

In the third quarter, Fayetteville State outscored SAU 8-0 off second chance points. Saint Augustine's trailed 44-33 going into the fourth and final quarter. The Lady Broncos led for 34:07 of the 40-minute contest before sealing the divisional sweep with a 55-40 win.

Maduegbunam finished with a game-high 13 points, along with five rebounds. Junior forward De' Aira Smith (Godwin, NC) came close to a double-double with 10 boards and nine points. Clifton ended the evening with eight points and 11 rebounds.



Kaaliya Williams and Kelsee Arnold led the Lady Falcons with 10 and nine points, respectively.

FSU caps the regular season on a two-game winning streak. Fayetteville State will play Bowie State (Northern No. 4 seed) on Tuesday, February 21st at 10:00 a.m. The opening contest of the 2017 CIAA Tournament will be played at the Bojangles Center in Charlotte, NC.
