Fayetteville State Women Defeat a Feisty Elizabeth City State, 64-58

Fayetteville, NC- The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team is streaking at the right time as they have now won nine consecutive games. The Broncos defeated Elizabeth City State 64-58 in Felton J. Capel Arena.

The Broncos add another CIAA win to improve to 13-9 overall and 8-5 in the conference as they remain atop the Southern division. The Vikings dropped to 9-16 overall and 2-11 in the conference.

Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) scored a season-high 20 points including two huge three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Jones shot 4 of 7 from behind the arc. Courtney Best (Raleigh, NC) had 17 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.

For Elizabeth City State, Tamara Harvey had 20 points and Jalyn Brown had 13 points.

The Broncos defense was stifling, forcing the Vikings to shoot 27% from the field. Fayetteville State was particularly dominant in the restricted area, outscoring Elizabeth City State 40-16 in the paint.



After the Vikings brought the Broncos lead down to two (2) points (47-45), Fayetteville State went on a game-sealing 11-3 run with less than two (2) minutes left.

Midway through the second quarter with the Vikings leading 26-19, the Broncos went on a 12-0 run to take the 31-26 lead at halftime. Elizabeth City State scored only seven (7) points in the second quarter as the Broncos held them to 14% shooting. ECSU used a 9-4 run at the end of the first quarter to control a 19-13 lead.

This Saturday, February 17th, the Broncos will play Winston-Salem State at 1 p.m. in Capel Arena for its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
