Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State (18-6 overall, 12-4 CIAA) defeated Livingstone College 84-63 in Capel Arena on Valentine's Day. The University participated in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association "Pink Zone" and honored cancer survivors during halftime. L'oreal Price led the stampede over the Blue Bears with a career high 32 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double.
The arena erupted over the news of Shaw's 59-45 victory over Johnson C. Smith; which declares Fayetteville State the CIAA Western Division Champion. FSU has JCSU and Livingstone left on its conference schedule prior to the CIAA Tournament.
The Lady Broncos got off to a rough start as the Lady Blue Bears (7-17 overall, 5-11 CIAA) led the majority of the first half. Livingstone led by as much as 12 points in the first half with 5:14 on the clock until FSU returned to life with a 14-1 run to go ahead by one with 2:50 remaining. Livingstone took the lead again but would lose it for good with 14 seconds left before intermission. FSU had the 41-40 halftime lead. Price had 23 of the Lady Broncos 41 points.
Fayetteville State was relentless in the second half as everyone on the team played in the game. Chelsea Jeter (Baltimore, MD) scored 12 points with Erica Gilley (Lexington, NC) scoring 11. FSU shot 43.2% from the field and 63.3% from the free throw line. The Lady Broncos scored 37 points off of the Lady Blue Bears 36 turnovers.
Brittany Wright led the way for Livingstone with 15 points. Rashida Elbourne had 13 points while Montiya Harris and Elicia Gilliam both had ten points. LC was 36.8% from the floor and 44.1% from the line. The Lady Blue Bears hit six of ten three-pointers.
Fayetteville State will honor its seniors on Tuesday, February 17th against Johnson C. Smith. Although Chelsea Jeter is a junior on the playing court, she is a senior in the classroom with plans on continuing her education in graduate school.
