FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State (20-3 overall |12-1 CIAA | 6-1 division) had two things on its mind with its rematch with the Lady Blue Bears. Avenge a January loss (78-83) to Livingstone and remain in the top spot of the CIAA Southern Division. With 13 days left until the opening round of the CIAA Tournament, FSU has a one-game lead over Shaw (5-2 Div.) and a two-game lead over St. Augustine's (4-3 Div.).

The Lady Broncos completed both tasks with a 79-49 thrashing of Livingstone (7-15 | 3-10 | 1-6) in Felton J. Capel Arena where Fayetteville State boasts a 10-1 record.

Give Livingstone a little credit. The Lady Blue Bears opened the game with a seven-point lead (11-4) at the 13:59 mark.

After the third tie of the game at eleven points, the "Lady Broncos Show" began. Kristen Hanzer (Senior - Youngsville, NC) lit-up the scoreboard with 27 points along with eight steals. Shuanda Ashford (Senior - Fayetteville, NC) popped it 20 points and Akysia Resper (Junior - Concord, NC) put in 11.

The Lady Broncos led by five at halftime with a 30-25 score. Livingstone shot a better 34.6% from the field compared to FSU's 22.9%, but the Lady Broncos made 13-of-19 free throws. Fayetteville State had an 11-2 advantage in points off turnovers and 7-3 in second chance points. Ashford led all with 11 points.

The game continued to be a highlight show for Fayetteville State in the second half; as the Lady Broncos improved its shooting performance to 56.3% and its free throw shooting to 81.3% (13-of-16). FSU made a total of 26-of-35 free throws (74.3%).

The Lady Broncos did not shoot much from beyond the three-point arc with seven attempts. Instead, the focus was down low where FSU won the battle in the paint 38-26. Fayetteville State applied great pressure on defense with 16 steals and 27 turnovers for the Livingstone. FSU scored a total of 23 points from turnovers and 12 on fast breaks.

 

 

Livingstone finished the game shooting 19-of-68 from the floor and was sent to the free throw line 16 times where they made nine of them. Jasmine Murray led the Lady Blue Bears effort with a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. Tyesha Tharpe also finished with double-digits points of 10.

Fayetteville State will face rival Winston-Salem State this Saturday, February 16 in Winston-Salem, NC at 5:30 pm. Livingstone will tip-off in Charlotte against Johnson C. Smith.
