Final Stats

Winston-Salem, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s basketball team fell 80-69 to Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, February 11th at the C.E. Gaines Center. FSU moves to 6-17 overall, 4-10 in the conference, and 2-6 in the Southern; while the Rams improve to 13-11 overall, 9-5 in the CIAA, and 6-2 in the division.

WSSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening three minutes of action. The Lady Broncos battled throughout the quarter, but trailed 19-14 at the end of the first. In the first three minutes of the second quarter, FSU cut their deficit to 22-20 off a layup from freshman guard Tajah Clark (Clayton, NC). At the 5:11, sophomore forward Kara Straite (Greensboro, NC) converted a field goal-free throw three point play to bring Fayetteville State within one (24-23).

On the next possession, junior forward De’ Aira Smith (Godwin, NC) converted a three point play of her own to grab a 26-24 lead with 4:59 left in the half. Jazmyn Saunders made a three pointer on the next play to recapture the lead for Winston-Salem State. FSU faced a deficit for the reminder of the quarter. The Rams held a 38-33 advantage at the half.

Smith filled up the stat sheet in the first half with team-highs of seven points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jatzmin Johnson led WSSU with nine points, followed by Trei Torain with eight points.

In the third, the Lady Broncos were outscored 11-0 in second chance points and 10-2 in points off turnovers. WSSU entered the fourth quarter with a 58-49 lead. Fayetteville State trailed throughout the final quarter. The Rams defeated their home court en route to an 80-69 win.

Freshman guard Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) finished with a game-high 15 points, along with two assists and two steals. Smith concluded the contest with a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards. Sophomore center Chinwendu Maduegbunam (Charlotte, NC) recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.



Fayetteville State returns to the court for their home season finale against Shaw University on Wednesday, February 15th. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU women’s basketball will recognize senior guard Emerald Smith on Senior Recognition Night.
