FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Lady Broncos have a home court advantage in Felton J. Capel Arena with its 9-1 home record. In Saturday afternoon's matchup against Johnson C. Smith, USA Today Sports' #25 Fayetteville State opened the second half with a 23-6 run to trample the Lady Golden Bulls 81-48.
Senior forward Shaunda Ashford (Fayetteville, NC) led the Fayetteville State (19-3 overall, 11-1 CIAA and 5-1 Southern Division) stampede with 23 points along with senior guard Kristen Hanzer (Youngsville, NC) who contributed 18 and nine steals. Point guard Akysia Resper (Junior - Concord, NC) had 15 points and five assists.
Johnson C. Smith (7-14, 4-8, 2-4) opened the game with quick three-pointer but the Lady Broncos responded with a 10-0 run in the following three minutes of play. FSU extended its lead to 15 (39-24) with 2:57 left and closed out the first half leading 44-31. Ashford and Resper both had 13 going into intermission.
Fayetteville State continued its dominance after the break forcing the Lady Golden Bulls into another 12 turnovers. The 24 total miscues contributed to 22 FSU points. The Lady Broncos scored 50 points in the low key compared to JCSU's 24. For the game, FSU shot 54% (34-of-63) in field goals and made 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the charity stripe. Fayetteville State led by as many as 38 with 3:37 left to play.
The Lady Golden Bulls were led by Deanna Downer, a junior guard from Elberton, GA, who scored 11 points. Brittany Dorsett contributed nine while two others finished with eight. JCSU finished 32.7% from the floor and made 9-of-12 (75%) in free throws.
The Lady Broncos will host Livingstone College on Wednesday, February 13 at 5:30 pm. The Lady Golden Bulls will return home for their next contest against St. Augustine's on Wednesday.
