Fayetteville, NC -- The Fayetteville State University women's basketball team earned a 69-61 victory over Livingstone College on Wednesday, February 8th at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos improve to 6-16 overall, 4-9 in the conference, and 2-5 in the division, while the Lady Blue Bears fall to 12-11 overall, 7-6 in the CIAA, and 4-3 in the Southern.

The game was a very close match-up from the beginning, with FSU and LC going back and forth. There were 10 lead changes and 10 ties in the contest. Both teams went toe-to-toe defensively, causing one another to turn the ball over numerous of times. However, the Lady Broncos were able to finish strong and held the lead at the end of each quarter.

Junior guard Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) was the top scorer for Fayetteville State with a team-high 22 points. Jones made 11 out of 12 free throws, contributing to the team's 89.5% (34-38) shooting from the free throw line. Junior guard Asia Potts (Rock Hill, SC) produced eight rebounds and 14 points with a perfect night (4-4) from the free throw line. This helped the Lady Broncos get ahead later on in the game, taking the largest lead of nine points in the fourth quarter.

For the Blue Bears, guard Zena Lovette attempted to keep up with the Lady Broncos by scoring a game-high 24 points. Livingstone shot 38.8% (19-49) from the field and 70.4% (19-27) from the free throw line. However, foul trouble cost the Lady Blue Bears the game.

FSU dominated the glass, outrebounding Livingstone 50-25. Junior guard De' Aira Smith (Godwin, NC) just missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards. Fayetteville State held a 14-2 advantage in second chance points and a 22-3 lead in bench points.



"We played together as a team, fought hard for four quarters, and the results reflected our effort," said head coach Serena King-Coleman. "This was a good win, especially at home and in the division. Our goal is to keep building on this success."

The Lady Broncos will return to the court on Saturday, February 11th against Winston-Salem State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC.
