FSU Broncos reach the .500 mark with a 70-54 Win over St. Augustine’s

Raleigh, NC – The Fayetteville State’s women’s basketball team reached the halfway mark of its CIAA Southern Division schedule.

Thus far the Broncos are a perfect 5-0 in the division after defeating Saint Augustine’s 70-54 in Emory Gymnasium. Fayetteville State (9-9 overall, 5-5 in the CIAA) has a 20-point victory margin during the streak.

Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) led the way for the Broncos with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY) followed with 11 points and Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) added 10.

It was a team effort as Fayetteville State forced 24 Falcon turnovers, which led to 28 points and outrebounded St. Augustine’s 43-23. FSU made 50% (26 of 52) of its shots with high percentage selections. Forty (40) of the Broncos points came within the paint. FSU limited itself with seven attempted three-pointers during the game.

The Broncos jumped right into its game plan, taking a 16-5 first quarter lead. St. Augustine’s attempted a run in the second quarter, but Fayetteville State prevailed with a 34-22 halftime lead.

Fayetteville State reached its highest lead of 23 points (48-25) with 2:18 left in the third quarter and set its pace to cruise control.

Saint Augustine’s is now 6-14 overall with a conference record of 3-8. The Falcons is 2-3 in the division.

Kaaliya Williams led the game for Saint Augustine’s with 18 points. Kelsee Arnold produced 11 points while Quiera Gilmore and Angela Caraballo added 10 points each. The Falcons shot 36.2% from the floor making 17 of 47 attempts.

Fayetteville State will travel to Sumter, SC for a 5:30 pm non-conference game against Morris College on Monday, February 5th. The Broncos will travel to Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday, February 7th for a rematch against the defending CIAA Champs Johnson C. Smith.
