RALEIGH, NC - Akysia Resper's layup, with 13 seconds remaining, lifted Fayetteville State to a 66-64 victory over 9th ranked and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Shaw Lady Bears. The Lady Broncos (17-3, 9-1, 3-1) earned their second victory of the season over an opponent ranked in the top 25 nationally. The contest at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium lived up to the billing as the "Marquee Matchup of the Week" by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Akysia Resper, a junior from Concord, NC, was one of three players to finish the game in double-figures as she tallied 18 points highlighted by a 9-of-12 night at the free-throw line. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) scored 10 points.
The nine successful free throws by Resper were part of an impressive effort by Fayetteville State at the charity stripe. The Lady Broncos finished 23-of-28 (82.1%) while the Lady Bears (17-3, 8-2, 3-1) were just 8-of-13 (61.5%). FSU, at one point, made 17 straight free-throws expanding from the first half into the second.
FSU was victorious earlier this season over the then-ranked No. 17 Nova Southeastern Sharks in Raleigh during the Shaw University Invitational. Shaw and Nova Southeastern were both ranked nationally by the USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
A jumper by Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) with one second left in the first half gave Fayetteville State a 36-35 lead heading into the locker room. The one-point lead was FSU's first since a 4-2 advantage at the 18:18 mark. Shaw led by as many as eleven (29-18) but the Lady Broncos would slowly chip away at the lead from the free-throw line. Fayetteville State finished the half making 14 consecutive free-throws as it tied the game 34-34 with 1:06 remaining.
FSU was just 9-of-29 shooting in the first half but converted on 17-of-21 free-throw attempts. The Lady Bears attempted seven free-throws but shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) overall including 3-of-5 behind the three-point line.
Fayetteville State pushed its advantage to 48-41 at the 14:23 mark of the second half but Shaw rallied to take a 52-51 lead four minutes later. That started a stretch in which the lead would change hands a total of six times. The Lady Broncos fell behind 62-57; but Hanzer would score five straight points to get the lead back. Sequoyah Griffin (Shaw) followed with a layup to make it 64-64 and set the stage for the game-winner by Resper.
FSU shot 30.8 percent (20-of-65) from the floor and forced Shaw into 28 turnovers. Fayetteville State led in points off turnovers (22-17) and second-chance points (18-9).
