ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Fayetteville State (14-5, 9-3 CIAA) ran over the Lady Vikings 101-83 in R.L. Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, NC. Four of the five Lady Bronco starters scored in double digits. Chelsea Jeter (Baltimore, MD) and L'Oreal Price (Raleigh, NC) each scored 17 points while Danielle Russell (Wilmington, NC) and Erica Gilley (Lexington, NC) scored 13 and 12 points respectfully. The Lady Vikings star player of the night was freshman point guard Kearah Jefferys (Wake Forest, NC). She gave the Lady Broncos something to think about with her 28 points and 8 steals, 2blocks and 2 assists. FSU held a 47-36 halftime over Elizabeth City State (3-14, 1-9 CIAA).
Sad to say, the Lady Vikings just could not get their offense going like Fayetteville State until late in the game. The Lady Broncos forced 29 turnovers which led to 26 points and 4 fast break points. Center Tiffany Haywood (Fayetteville, NC) put up 11 points within ten minutes in the first half. She finished the game with 14 points total.
Elizabeth City State dominated the game defensively by out rebounding Fayetteville State 44 to 39. 24 of the rebounds were offensive which led to more second chance points (21) for the Lady Vikings than the Lady Broncos (17). ECSU's offense became most effective at the seven-minute mark. As a compliment to their defense, the Lady Vikings dropped FSU's lead from 26 (82-56) to 11 points (90-79). ECSU racked up 18 steals from 27 turnovers to add to their defensive stats, but struggled offensively. The Lady Vikings shot a poor 36% from the field while the bench only contributed 20 points to the scoreboard. Elizabeth City State's 86% from the free throw line, 26 of 30 attempts, was not enough to counter the Lady Broncos attack.
The Lady Broncos bench scored more points (37) than the Lady Vikings total points in the paint as team (32). FSU dished out 18 assists and outscored its opponent in the paint with 44 points.
Danielle Russell was nearly perfect from the free throw line making 11 out of 12 free throws. Fayetteville State has now won its seventh straight victory and gave Elizabeth City State its fourth straight home game loss.
Fayetteville State will continue its road trip as the Lady Broncos will travel to Bowie, Maryland for a rematch with the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, January 31. Bowie State won the first match-up with a 74-71 buzzard beater.
