Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s basketball earned an impressive 61-44 divisional victory over Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday, January 28th at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU improves to 5-15 overall, 3-8 in the conference, and 1-4 in the Southern, while the Lady Falcons fall to 3-20 overall, 0-11 in the CIAA, and 0-5 in the division.

Three Lady Broncos scored double figures led by sophomore center Chinwendu Maduegbunam (Charlotte, NC) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) added 12 points and two assists, followed by junior guard De’ Aira Smith (Godwin, NC) with 10 points and six boards.

Kaaliya Williams led Saint Augustine’s with team-highs of 12 points and five rebounds. Kamya Renwicks had eight points and four boards.

Fayetteville State controlled the contest from horn to horn with no lead changes or ties. By the 3:26 mark of the first quarter, SAU trailed 14-4. At the break, the Lady Broncos held a 38-19 advantage. FSU shot 51% (16-31) from the field in the first half, compared to 14% (3-21) shooting from Saint Augustine’s.

At the conclusion of the game, FSU outscored the Lady Falcons 42-12 in the paint, 25-17 off turnovers, and won the rebounding battle 50-23.

“We played with a lot of confidence today and the results reflected our effort,” said head coach Serena King-Coleman. “It feels good to get back in the victory column, especially in the division; now we have to continue to build on this success.”

FSU shot 40% (27-67) from the floor and 75% (6-8) from the free throw line for the game. The Lady Broncos led by as much as 26 in the second half before recording the 61-44 win.



Fayetteville State returns to action on Saturday, February 4th against divisional foe Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Capel Arena. FSU Athletics will celebrate their annual “Ball in Pink” initiative to further bring awareness to breast cancer and prevention of the disease.
