FSU Broncos Stampede Rival Winston-Salem State 93-59

Winston-Salem, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team entered the C.E. Gaines Center with more on the line than the sole lead of the CIAA Southern Division. It is rivalry night for the Broncos as FSU faces its arch nemeses, the Rams of Winston-Salem State.

Let the FSU win streak increase to three (3) as Fayetteville State convincingly handed the Rams a 93-59 defeat and improve to 3-0 in the division.  Fayetteville State is now 3-5 in conference play and 7-9 overall. Winston-Salem State drops to 2-1 and 3-6 in the CIAA.

Noni Kuumba (Tracy, CA) turned in another solid performance with a game-high 26 points. Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) followed with an 18-point game. Courtney Best (Raleigh, NC) and Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) finished with double-digit points with 16 and 14, respectively.

FSU opened the game with the hot hands shooting 72% (13-of-18) from the floor and finished with 58.2% (39-of-67).

The only highlight for the Rams was the second period. WSSU outscored the Broncos 17-9 in the period and held a 22-18 halftime advantage on the boards.

Holding a 40-36 halftime lead, FSU poured it on in the second half.

The Broncos made 11-of-17 field goals in the third quarter and 12-of-16 in the fourth. FSU scored 24 fast break points by breaking the Rams full court press. The defensive pressure by Fayetteville State limited WSSU to two (2) fast break points and forced them to commit 16 turnovers. Most of the Broncos fast break points came from the turnovers. FSU finished the game with 26 points off turnovers.

Fayetteville State had Winston-Salem State so frustrated, the Rams last made field goal was at the 2:43 mark of the fourth quarter.


 

 

Kandace Tate led the Rams effort with 16 points while Jahlia Williams finished with 11. WSSU shot 32.8% (20-of-61) from the floor.

Fayetteville State will host Shaw University in Capel Arena on Saturday, January 27th at 2:00 pm. First responders in uniform will be granted free admission to the doubleheader.
