CHARLOTTE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team kicked off CIAA Southern Division play in exciting fashion Saturday as it held on for a 71-62 victory over Johnson C. Smith at Brayboy Gymnasium. The Lady Broncos (15-2 overall, 7-0 CIAA, 1-0 Southern Division) overcame a two-point halftime deficit (32-30) to pick up their seventh straight victory in conference play. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) scored a game-high 19 points for FSU. Johnson C. Smith falls to 5-11, 2-5 and 0-1.
The win is significant for Lady Broncos Head Coach Eva Patterson-Heath. The fourth-year head coach was coaching in her 100th career game for Fayetteville State.
Hanzer talllied her 15th double-digit scoring performance of the season while adding six rebounds and six assists. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) added 16 points and five assists while Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) contributed 14 points.
The opening half was tight throughout; as the lead changed hands five different times. The Lady Broncos held the lead for the first seven minutes. The Lady Golden Bulls raced out to a five-point lead (19-14) with 8:54 remaining before Fayetteville State’s defense stepped up. FSU forced Johnson C. Smith into turnovers on three straight possessions and converted them to take a 22-19 lead.
The Lady Broncos pushed their lead to 24-19; but saw it dwindle as the Lady Golden Bulls controlled the boards. Johnson C. Smith re-gained the lead at 32-28 with 1:28 left but Resper made it a two-point game (32-30) right before the end of the half.
FSU did not attempt a free-throw in the first half; but made up for it in the second making 16-of-21 attempts. The Lady Broncos scored the first basket of the second half and never trailed from that point on. Fayetteville State held a 53-46 lead with 10:08 left. The Lady Golden Bulls stuck around to trail by four points or less for nearly nine minutes. FSU recorded its final 11 points at the charity stripe to extend its lead to a game-high nine points (71-62).
Fayetteville State finished the game 26-of-60 (43.3%) from the floor as it held a 34-28 advantage in points in the paint and 20-10 in points off turnovers. The Lady Broncos forced Johnson C. Smith into 21 turnovers.
The Lady Golden Bulls shot 42.4% (25-of-69) overall and went 8-of-12 at the free-throw line. Brittany Dorsett scored a team-high 14 points and Kaylah Gholson added 11 off the bench for JCSU.
FSU will return to action on Wednesday, January 23 when it travels to Salisbury, NC to take on Livingstone College at 5:30 p.m. Johnson C. Smith travels to Saint Augustine’s on Wednesday.
