FAYETTEVILLE STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES 71-60 ON THE ROAD TO LIVINGSTONE

Salisbury, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s basketball team drops divisional clash to Livingstone College 71-60 on Wednesday, January 18th inside Trent Gymnasium. FSU moves to 4-13 overall, 2-6 in conference, and 0-2 in the Southern; while the Lady Blue Bears improve to 8-8 overall, 3-3 in the CIAA, and 1-0 in the division.

Fayetteville State took command of the contest in the first quarter. FSU closed out the opening period with a 17-10 lead following a layup from redshirt freshman guard Tajah Clark (Clayton, NC). Livingstone was outscored 12-6 in the paint and 9-0 off turnovers.

The Lady Blue Bears won the second quarter 19-15, but still trailed 32-29 at halftime. Junior guard Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) led the way for FSU with nine points in the first half. Sophomore forward Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) chipped in six points.

Livingstone started out the third quarter with a 13-4 scoring run. Shannon Buchanan made two free throws with 4:31 on the clock for a 42-36 LC advantage. FSU turned up the defensive intensity and held the Lady Blue Bears nearly scoreless for the remainder of the third. Fayetteville State scored 12 points in the last four minutes, including six points from Clifton for a 48-44 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The game ended up in a 52-52 tie with 8:11 left to play. Deonna Young drained a three-pointer at the 6:20 mark to move Livingstone ahead 57-55. Two free throws from sophomore center Chinwendu Maduegbunam (Charlotte, NC) and a last second three-pointer from sophomore guard Kayla Phifer (Greensboro, NC) were the only points by FSU in the final six minutes.

 

 

Young scored 12 points in the fourth for Livingstone, including three three-pointers to lead the comeback effort. Fayetteville State was outscored 27-12 in the final quarter.

Clifton ended the evening with a game-high 17 points, along with four rebounds. Jones finished with nine points, three boards, and two assists. Phifer pitched in eight points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Five Lady Blue Bears scored double figures. Brittany Taylor had a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds with six assists. Young had 15 points, including 12 in the fourth. Asia Green, Zena Lovette, and Buchanan all had 10 points.

The Lady Broncos return to action on Saturday, January 21st in a divisional matchup versus Winston-Salem State University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena.
