FAYETTEVILLE NC – The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (14-2 overall, 6-0 CIAA) took Bowie State (4-10, 1-5 CIAA) for a walk in the park with a 70-59 victory in Felton J. Capel Arena. The dynamic duo of Kristen Hanzer and Shuanda Ashford combined for a total of 40 points. FSU set the pace in the first half with a 39-21 lead. CIAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Week Eva Patterson-Heath and the Lady Broncos remain unbeaten in conference play.
Kristen Hanzer (Youngsville, NC) finished with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. She was 5-finished of-12 from the floor and 10-of-11 at the charity stripe. Shuanda Ashford (Fayetteville, NC) also netted 20 points for the night. She made 7-of-12 from the field with one three pointer and 5-of-6 from the line. Akysia Resper (Concord, NC) also chipped in a dozen points. DaQuondra Cuthbertson (Spencer, NC) pulled in ten rebounds.
Channell Mackey (Clinton, MD) led the Lady Bulldogs effort with ten points.
The Lady Broncos limited Bowie State to 28.6% shooting from the floor in the first half. BSU was 8-of-28 in field goals and 2-of-10 in three-pointers. The Lady Bulldogs visited the free-throw line four times where they made three of them.
FSU made 48.1% (13-of-27) in field goals and 80% (12-of-15) in free-throws for the half.
Fayetteville State pushed to its largest lead of 55-28 (27 points) at the 11:18 mark of the second half. FSU held the rebounding advantage of 44-35 and the points in the paint (30-20). The Lady Broncos finished at the line with 80.8%; making 21-of-26 free-throws.
Bowie State finished the night shooting 36.7% (22-of-60) in field goals and made 13 trips to the charity stripe where they hit eight, (61.5%).
Fayetteville State will travel to the Queen City of Charlotte, NC on Saturday, January 19 for a 5:30 pm clash with Johnson C. Smith University.
Bowie State will host Lincoln University (Pa.) on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
