FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Lincoln Lady Lions tried to make a run at the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos.
But the Lady Broncos answered every time - and they did it better.
Tiffany Haywood (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) was a point away from enjoying her sixth double-double of the season while Tierra Coleman (So., Cameron, NC) continued her emergence with a team-high 16 points to go with nine rebounds as Fayetteville State snapped a five-game losing streak with a 61-53 victory over Lincoln (PA) on Thursday night at Felton J. Capel Arena.
"I am certainly pleased with the effort," said Fayetteville State head coach Eva Patterson-Heath. "We feel good about picking up our first win at home and the first win the CIAA. It's a good feeling."
Fayetteville State (2-10, 1-3) fell behind early in the game, and although it was just by four points, the Lady Broncos were struggling to hold onto the ball. But they answered Lincoln's 5-0 spurt with a 15-2 run started by a Haywood three-point play and buoyed by the Lady Broncos' ability to get out into transition and score easy baskets.
"We wanted to put a lot of pressure on them, and we changed defenses a lot to try to gets ourselves out into transition for some easy baskets. I feel like we did that well tonight."
LaQuasha Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC) made a tough runner as the clock expired to end the half, and Fayetteville State closed the period on a 21-6 run to take a 33-22 lead into the break.
Still, Lincoln made another pass at it. Tahler McIntosh and Sharay DuBose bookended 3-pointers for a 12-0 run to open the second half, erasing the Lady Broncos' lead in just 3:41 to take a 34-33 advantage.
But again, Fayetteville State answered. The Lady Broncos scored six points in a span of 40 seconds, then got a steal and a layup from Jordan, a tough runner by Courtney Small (Fr. Roanoke Rapdis, NC) and a 3-pointer from Ashleigh Edwards (Fr., Columbia, SC). That amounted to a 13-4 spurt, and Fayetteville State regain the upper hand with a 46-37 lead with 10:59 remaining.
"We wanted to put a lot of pressure on them, and we changed defenses a lot to try to gets ourselves out into transition for some easy baskets," said Patterson-Heath. "I feel like we did that well tonight."
Still, Lincoln didn't go away. The Lady Lions got a runner from Dubose with 2 minutes to go, cutting the deficit to just four, 56-52. But Fayetteville State's Capricia Smalls (Fr., McLeansville, NC) buried a deep 3-pointer to give the Lady Broncos some much-needed breathing room at 59-52 with 1:47 remaining.
"That was big," said Patterson-Heath. "And she had just come off the bench."
Jordan finished with 10 points and a team-high four assists while Amanda Sinclair (Jr, Red Springs, NC) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds as Fayetteville State outrebounded Lincoln 55-45 and held the Lady Lions to just 28 percent shooting from the floor.
DeJuana Mosley led Lincoln with 16 points and eight rebounds. Sharay DuBose added nine points and eight rebounds.
