Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State (13-2, 5-0 CIAA) crashed the offensive boards to remain undefeated in CIAA play with its 76-51 victory over Virginia Union (5-8, 2-3 CIAA). The Lady Broncos pulled down 20 of its 45 rebounds from the offensive boards and converted them into 22 second chance points. FSU's Shuanda Ashford (Fayetteville, NC) led the game with 24 points. The Lady Broncos led 37-30 at halftime.
Fundamental basketball is what Fayetteville State focused on in its game plan. FSU made 25-of-35 free-throws (71.4%) while limiting Virginia Union's free opportunities to 13. The Lady Broncos made 15-of-17 in the first half and 10-of-18 in the second. The Lady Panthers were 6-of-13 (46.2%) for the night.
The defense of the Lady Broncos forced a total of 28 Panther turnovers and converted them into 44 points. It also dropped a first half shooting performance of 52% to 30% (9-of-30) for Virginia Union. VUU struggled with their missed shots, grabbing a dozen offensive boards and tipping in eight second-chance points.
Shuanda Ashford was 8-of-13 from the floor. Half of her 24 points came from her six offensive rebounds while eight came from the free-throw line (8-of-10). She finished with eight total rebounds and three steals.
Kristen Hanzer (Youngsville, NC), who leads the CIAA in scoring with 18.9 per game, finished with 18 points and six steals. Tierra Coleman (Cameron, NC) finished the game with a dozen rebounds.
Ashle Freeman led the Lady Panthers with 14 points while Melyce Brown chipped in 12. Virginia Union was 40% from the field with 22-of-55 shooting. VUU was 3-of 6 from the free-throw line in the first half and 3-of-7 in the second.
The Lady Broncos will play host to Bowie State on Monday, January, 14 in Felton J. Capel Arena. Tip-off is at 5:30 pm. Virginia Union will travel to Raleigh on Monday for a cross-divisional match-up against Saint Augustine's.
