RICHMOND, VA – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to retake the lead, but ultimately fell short at Virginia Union, 68-63, on Saturday night.
Amber Calvin (21 points) recorded her fifth 20-plus point output of the season, and Deja Middleton (11 points, 13 rebounds) had her sixth double-double of the year. Bria Robinson (12 points, 10 rebounds) also recorded a double-double, her first of the season.
FSU built a 9-1 lead early into the game and looked to be well on their way to having a comfortable early lead. But stingy defense by the Lady Panthers, who forced 25 turnovers and limited FSU to 23.5-percent shooting (8-of-34) shooting in the first half.
By limiting FSU opportunities, VUU was able to seize momentum – and the lead – by the 4:26 mark of the first half, when Ashle Freeman made a pair of free throws to give the Lady Panthers a 24-22 lead. VUU eventually took a 34-27 lead into the break.
The Lady Broncos offense awoke in the second half. In the final stanza, FSU (10-4 overall, 3-2 CIAA) shot a blistering 50 percent from the field en route to turning a 34-27 deficit into a 61-50 lead with 6:02 to play.
Unfortunately for FSU, the Lady Panthers defense stepped up big with critical stops down the stretch and went on a 12-0 run to retake the lead.
A Je’Lena Robertson foul shot tied things at 62-62, but Virginia Union’s Jasmin Dancy made two fouls shots with 1:46 to play. Freeman hit two foul shots immediately after Calvin made one, and two more free throws from Melyse Brown closed the game.
The Lady Broncos outrebounded Virginia Union, 48-41, but the Lady Panthers outscored FSU 24-17 off of turnovers and 35-17 off the bench. FSU outscored VUU in the paint (28-24) and on second-chance points (12-11).
FSU concludes its three-game road trip at Bowie State at 5:30 pm on Monday.
