Shuanda Ashford (34) Had 21 Points In Victory At Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association declared the Fayetteville State at Elizabeth City State women’s game the “Marquee Matchup of the Week”. Both teams entered the RL Vaughan Center with identical records with claims as leaders in their respectful division. After 40 minutes of CIAA action, the matchup proved to be a must watch game.
With the game up for grabs with 2:05 remaining, the Lady Broncos broke the seventh tie of the half with a 10-5 run for the 75-70 victory. Fayetteville State (11-2, 3-0 CIAA) made six of its final ten points from the free throw line and had four players to score in double figures.
Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) recorded a game-high 21 points while Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) collected her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) finished with 16 points and seven assists. Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) poured in 14 points.
The Lady Broncos led by 17 midway through the first half but succumbed to Elizabeth City State (10-3, 2-1 CIAA) as the lead dropped to three at intermission (33-30).
Fayetteville State stampeded out of the gate in the first half scoring the first 14 points. The Vikings fought back to finish the half on a 15-2 run to trail at halftime.
Elizabeth City State took its first lead of the game (37-34) at the 18:31 mark of the second half. The Vikings extended its lead to 53-47 but FSU tied the contest at 59 with 5:47 left. The game battled back-and-forth and witnessed the fifth tie at 63 with 3:31 left. The Lady Broncos held a two point (69-67) advantage with 1:09 remaining and went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line to extend the lead to 75-67.
Fayetteville State turned in one of its best shooting performances of the season. FSU shot 49.1% (26-of-53) from the floor while the Vikings were 27-of-71 (38%). The free-throw line is where the fate of the game rested as the Lady Broncos went 20-of-25 (80%) and ECSU made 10-of-16 (62.5%).
De’Rya Wylie led the Vikings with 18 points and Shatara Jackson scored 16. Stephanie Harper pulled in a team high 11 boards.
The Lady Broncos are off to their best start under fourth year Head Coach Eva Patterson-Heath. Fayetteville State will return to Felton J. Capel Arena on Thursday, January 10th to take on Lincoln (PA) at 5:30 p.m.
