FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Talaya Lynch scored a career-high 31 points as Chowan held off a furious second-half rally by Fayetteville State to down the Lady Broncos 66-54 on Saturday night at Felton J. Capel Arena.
The Lady Broncos (6-5, 0-2) had trouble keeping pace as a team with Lynch in the first half. For much of the opening period, Lynch outscored Fayetteville State, scoring 21 points. She was the fuel to a 26-8 run by the Hawks, who raced to their biggest lead, 37-17, with 1:47 left in the first half after two buckets in quick succession by Lynch.
But Fayetteville State used a quick rally in the half's waning minutes to give itself a chance. Je'Lena Robertson (So., Houston, Texas), who had 11 points at halftime, hit two shots, including one at the buzzer, as the Lady Broncos scored eight straight points to close within 12, 37-25, at the break.
Chowan (6-6, 1-1) managed to build a 46-27 lead with a 9-2 run barely 3 minutes into the second half, but that's when the Lady Broncos came alive. Effectively running the offense, Tashama Banner (Sr., Fayetteville, N.C.) got the Lady Broncos in gear. Fayetteville State hit on a 13-1 spurt, closing to 47-40 with 12:45 to go.
Fayetteville State continued to come on. Banner had a steal and a bucket before Brittany Wilkins (Jr., Greenville, N.C.) put together a three-point play, capping a 20-5 onslaught that brought Fayetteville State within just four points, 51-47, with 8:07 to go.
Chowan managed to keep the Lady Broncos at bay, building a nine-point edge. Fayetteville State managed to close within five twice in the closing minutes before being forced to foul.
Fayetteville State had plenty of bright spots, with DaQuondra Cuthbertson scoring 12 points to go with eight rebounds in her first game with the Lady Broncos. Makeea Suggs (Jr., Bethel, N.C.) added a game-high 11 rebounds and four assists.
Lynch, who made 11 of 19 field goal attempts, added 10 rebounds for the double-double. Ransheda Jennings added 13 points for the Hawks while Summer Curtis had a team-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Fayetteville State hosts Elizabeth City State at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
