PETERSBURG, VA -Fayetteville State rallied in the second half to pick up a 57-51 victory over Virginia State on Saturday afternoon at Daniel Gymnasium. The battle was won via free throws as the Lady Broncos connected on 13-of-20 (65%) in the second half compared to a game total of 13 by the Trojans. Fayetteville native Shuanda Ashford scored a team-high 20 points for the Lady Broncos. FSU trailed at halftime 29-20.
Fayetteville State improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in league play while the Trojans fall to 7-5 and 0-2. FSU is off to its first 2-0 start in league play since the 2009-10 campaign.
Ashford had her best offensive performance of the season making 6-of-10 attempts from the field and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) was 10-of-10 at the charity stripe and finished with 16 points. Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) pulled down nine rebounds as the Lady Broncos held a 43-34 advantage on the boards.
Fayetteville State retained its composure in the second half shooting 11-of-24 from the field as Virginia State struggled with 7-of-29 (24.1%). The Lady Broncos also refined its defense and limited the Trojans' free throws to seven attempts in the half. Two VSU individuals visited the line for the entire game.
The Lady Broncos made just two three-pointers in the contest by Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC). Her second made attempt handed the Lady Broncos a lead they would never relinquish at 53-51 with 2:26 remaining. Hanzer sealed the game with four consecutive free throws in the final minute.
Fayetteville State concluded the contest with a 21-15 advantage in points off turnovers.
Lamesha Deal led the game for Virginia State with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Yashica Blakney contributed nine points; all three pointers.
FSU wraps up its six-game road trip on Monday, January 7 in Elizabeth City at 5:30 pm.
